What the new Digital Adoption Program is all about

You may have heard that the Federal government launched the Canada Digital Adoption Program recently. It is a combination of a grant and an interest-free loan for the following activities:

1) Adoption of e-commerce tools by customer-facing businesses (e.g. retail, hospitality) up to $2,400 per applicant

2) Technology assessment for small-to-medium-sized businesses (1-499 employees) to complete advanced technology assessment by one of the approved consultants – up to $15K per applicant

3) Purchasing and implementation of the technology (e.g. software, hardware) recommended as a result of the assessment – interest-free loan up to $100K

As we learned more about the program last week, we wanted to share some technical nuances with you:

  • You need to create a GCKey account for your business and complete a 41-question technology self-assessment before applying for the grant.
  • The grant application form is very basic and there is not much to write, to be honest.
  • You can’t choose an approved technology consultant unless your grant application is approved.
  • You can’t apply for the interest-free loan unless the approved technology consultant completes the digital technology assessment.
  • You can apply for the interest-free loan only to purchase the technology recommended by the approved consultant. Whatever you selected yourself doesn’t count.
  • The program bans contingency fees (% of the funding).

Based on all the above, we will offer our clients a program walkthrough assistance to help them to go through every step of the CDAP program via screen share.

Happy Canada Day and Gift from Feds!

Happy Canada Day! It’s a day when I realize how grateful I am for the chance to now live in this great country and all the opportunities it offers. This year, the holiday is overshadowed, and I stand with those who chose not to celebrate. At the very least, I hope everyone will enjoy the outdoors and meet friends and family.

Here is a gift for you. Last night the Senate (on its last business day before summer break) finally passed the Federal budget bill. It means that the new government funding programs proposed back in April will soon be open for applications. We expect them in August or September, 2021.

Among the new programs are the government grant for the aerospace sector, national funding to help adopt hardware and software, continuation of the emergency subsidies and more.

Fill out the Eligibility Check form proactively at http://www.fgwinc.ca/eligibility, and we will contact you when the details of the above programs are announced.

What is in Ontario 2021 budget for you?

Yesterday the Ontario government announces a new budget for the 2021 fiscal year (April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022). As expected, lots of funding is allocated to healthcare and impacted families, but there is a place for provincial funding for businesses. Here are the major highlights.

  • Ontario Small Business Support Grant that provides up to $20K to the most adversely impacted businesses in Ontario is extended. The companies that have already received it may expect another contribution in spring, and they don’t need to apply again. New applicants are welcome.
  • Digital Main Street Program that helps businesses get online is extended.
  • Funding was promised to wineries, cideries and breweries impacted by the pandemic.
  • Regional Opportunities Investment Tax Credit that supports business expansion in Western, Eastern and Northern Ontario is doubled and will reimburse 20% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $90K.
  • Funding for Northern Ontario Heritage Fund has been extended for two years. The new programs will help increase economic development and promote job creation in all regions of the North.

The question now is what will happen to the other provincial funding programs not listed above? The budget does not have a clear answer, but we can foresee the following.
