The Automotive Supplier Innovation Program’s primary goal is to help Canadian automotive suppliers gain a competitive edge through new innovative products and processes. The program assists R&D projects to become commercially viable by supporting product development and technology demonstration on a cost-shared basis with participating firms. The Automotive Supplier Innovation Program (ASIP) will complement existing initiatives supporting the automotive sector, such as the Automotive Innovation Fund (AIF), by strengthening Canada’s parts supply base and creating a favourable environment for automotive research and development, in conjunction with providing firms new opportunities to enter global supply chains.

Eligibility Criteria: Automotive Supplier Innovation Program (ASIP)

  • Must be for-profit companies incorporated pursuant to the laws of Canada, carrying on business in Canada.
  • The purpose of the project must be innovative product or process development activities at the demonstration and/or prototyping stage targeted at the automotive sector in Canada.
  • Must employ less than 500 employees globally or global revenues must be less than $1 billion. Larger firms are eligible, but must partner with at least one Canadian-based small and medium-sized enterprise.
  • The applicant must be in Ontario and have at least 50% of their annual sales come from automotive industry clients.
  • Applicants must explain what software, hardware, and/or training will make them more productive with key impact metrics related to these productivity improvements.

 

Eligible Costs: Automotive Supplier Innovation Program (ASIP)

  • Developing new and innovative technologies, products and processes;
  • Undertaking leading edge engineering and design, prototype development and/or demonstrations;
  • Undertaking advanced product testing and validation.
  • Eligible costs shall include incremental costs deemed essential for the implementation of the project including direct labour, materials, equipment, overhead, and other costs directly related to the project.
  • Pre-commercial product and process testing and validation

Examples of Projects Funded by Automotive Supplier Innovation Program (ASIP):

In January 2017 Nemak of Canada Corporation received up to $3,000,000 through Automotive Supplier Innovation Program (ASIP) in partnership with Arbec Tool and Machine Ltd, to support the development of engine blocks made of lightweight aluminum.

In December 2016 Nano One Materials Corp received up to $1,950,922 to support the development of electric vehicle battery technology.

In August 2016 Bluewrist Inc. received up to $821,445 to develop an innovative scanning inspection system that will be five times faster than existing technologies.

In April 2016) the Electromac Group received up to $1,478,500 to develop an innovative prototype and process to use hot stamping technology in the production of small components that are stronger and lighter.
