The Government of Canada has launched the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) to help Canadian businesses respond to global trade pressures and strengthen their competitiveness.

Through RTRI, eligible businesses can receive 50%-75% of eligible expenses in repayable or grant funding. Companies in the steel and automotive industries have a priority and can access a larger amount in grant funding.

The program invests in time-sensitive activities that boost productivity, lower costs, and open doors to new markets while strengthening supply chains in Canada.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, businesses must:

  • Be located and operating anywhere in Canada for at least 3 years
  • Operate as a for-profit business
  • Employ 5-499 full-time employees
  • Have been viable before tariffs imposed by the U.S. and China (prior to March 21, 2025)
  • Have at least 25% of sales in markets targeted by tariffs
    or
    Show direct impacts from ongoing trade disruptions (e.g., U.S. or China tariffs, Canadian countermeasures).

  • Digitization, automation, and technology adoption
  • Market research, development, expansion, and trade missions
  • Building partnerships and optimizing supply chains
  • Strengthening domestic supply chains and internal trade
  • Business support and advisory services
  • Reshoring production, R&D, and skilled expertise to Southern Ontario
