Are SR&ED & Customs Duty Refund programs right for you?

You’ve known us for some time as a professional grant writing team but I wanted to make sure you take full advantage of other types of government assistance, such as tax credits and customs duty refund programs.

SR&ED Tax Credit is by far the most popular Canadian government funding program that pays a portion of your labour, material and other expenses incurred for a product or process design, development or improvement. Your business must be a Canadian corporation and experience uncertainties that you overcome to develop or improve the product or process. We’ve teamed up with experienced SR&ED writers to be able to offer SR&ED service to our clients. Learn more about SR&ED Tax Credit and determine your eligibility here.

Customs Duty Drawback is the customs duty refund program. In case if you imported goods and paid customs duty at the Canadian border, and then exported goods made of those imported parts or materials, you may qualify for a refund of the duty. Some conditions apply. Learn more about Customs Duty Drawback and determine your eligibility here.

90% Off Your Rent. Do You Qualify?

This week the Federal government published the guidelines of the the new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS).

Unlike its predecessor, this program no longer requires landlords to apply. Now, if you rent a commercial or industrial space, or pay an interest on commercial mortgage your business is eligible assuming that you had revenue drop in or after October 2020 compared to October 2019 or the average of January and February 2019.

If your business was forced to shut down or reduce its operations after September 27, 2020, following provincial, regional or municipal regulations, it qualifies for an additional Lockdown Support.

Eligible costs include:

  • Commercial rent (excluding HST)
  • Property taxes
  • Property insurance
  • Interest on commercial mortgages (less any subleasing revenues).

The Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) will pay up to 65% of eligible costs (depending on the % of your revenue drop) and up to additional 25% if your business was forced to shut down or reduce its operations.

The application intake will start soon on Canada Revenue Agency website.

Rent Subsidy Program is Coming

We are very glad to share that after the months of criticism, the Federal government announced a new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy program to help businesses through pandemic. The program is still in the works and will start accepting applications in the very near future.

However, we would like to share some of its highlights to make sure you will be ready to apply for it when the intake opens.

Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy will be available to both tenants and property owners until June 2021. The new rent subsidy would support businesses, charities, and non-profits that have suffered a revenue drop, by subsidizing up to 65% of their rent and other eligible expenses until December 19, 2020. The applicants would be able to make claims retroactively for the period that began September 27 and ends October 24, 2020.

Don’t know where to start and how to prepare an application or have questions about other government funding programs?

Is your CEWS application right?

As you may have heard, the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) was extended through the summer of 2021.

We understand that you may have applied for the subsidy yourself or had a third party to do so. Was the calculation completed accurately? Have you maximized your benefits? Have you applied for all eligible periods?

To get you a piece of mind, we are introducing a new service – CEWS Audit. We will:

  1. Validate your eligibility for CEWS.
  2. Check the accuracy of calculations and claims.
  3. Ensure the paperwork is in order in case of a future audit.
  4. Adjust applications if we can maximize the subsidy for you.

Are you ready to get a piece of mind and a qualified second opinion?
If so, reply to this email and we will discuss the next steps with you.

What’s in a Throne Speech for You?

Yesterday in his Throne Speech the Prime Minister announced the extension of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) through the summer of 2021. The program reimburses up to 75% of the salaries if your sales are down due to pandemic. This extension is important because it provides the funding option to those businesses that are not impacted by the pandemic yet, but may be impacted in months to come.

However, before the extension becomes a law it has to be passed by the Parliament. And last night the opposition leaders clearly demonstrated that it won’t be an easy vote. So be patient and stay tuned to our updates.

If you missed the speech and curious what else is there, check out this link.
